Currently reading ‘A Curious Guide to London’ by Simon Leyland (Bantam Press, 2014) and wanted to share this little gem from a book full of similar quirky and little known stories and historical facts-
In 1792, Lady Almeria Braddock took umbrage over a remark about her age made by a Mrs Elphinstone, so she challenged the younger lady to a duel in Hyde Park.
Over two hundred people were present to watch Lady Braddock’s hat blown off by a pistol shot and Mrs Elphinstone wounded in the arm during the subsequent sword fight.
Hostilities ceased at this point, with Mrs Elphinstone agreeing to apologize. The ladies curtsied to each other, then left for tea”.
